We provide teaching volunteering opportunities in partnership with the Ghana Education Service (Awutu Senya District) and some other private schools within the community, placing volunteers in areas where their assistance will be needed.
Lack of teachers in most of the local schools leads to lack of motivation among the student population and low standard of education in the surrounding area. Teaching volunteering helps to solve some of these challenges and volunteers in the past have been a source of motivation to both pupils and staff of the schools.
Volunteering as a teacher in one of our local schools (Nursery/Kindergarten, Primary, Junior High, Senior High, charity home schools, commercial, technical and vocational schools), you can choose to teach any of the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Computer Studies (ICT), Social Studies, French, Geography, History, Accounting, Business Management, Home Economics, Technical Drawing, Creative Arts, Physical Education, Religious Studies, Music, or any other skills you are interested in teaching such as Photography, Web Design, First Aid .etc. If you are an experienced teacher, you could volunteer by training other educational professionals.
Partner schools normally have sports on Friday, and interested teachers can also be part of the sports program to help with coaching and games.
CHF has a number of school clubs which gives volunteers the opportunity to help organize quiz and debate competitions to help motivate the children academically and also broaden their knowledge.
There are also a number of fun educational trips or excursions organized by the CHF to help volunteers learn a lot from the country. Ghanaians are known for their high hospitality and therefore volunteers would be very happy to work with the local people. Our caring and friendly staff is ever ready to support or help volunteers whenever necessary.
At the end of the placement, volunteers are awarded a certificate and a reference letter from Cheerful Hearts Foundation and the host institution, including a testimonial from the Ghana Education Service.
Typical Day of a Volunteer
Wake up around 7.00 am, bath, breakfast. Go to work for 8.00am. Teach at the school how your timetable provides. Lunch at around 12 noon at the school or a nearby restaurant. Return to work until 2.00 or 3.00pm. The number of working hours ranges from 3-6 hours per day; though the timetable is entirely flexible to suit the volunteer. After working hours, the volunteer plans how he/she uses the remainder of the day. The volunteer can help with after-school clubs, sports, games with the children, administrative support, or just relax and enjoy some free time. At about 6.00pm supper is served, warm friendship from colleagues at work and town folk to keep you company and show you around and immerse into Ghanaian culture. Ghanaians are renowned for their friendliness and hospitality. The volunteer may also wish to spend their free time with other international volunteers in the area.
Weekends are for your free time. CHF members will be more than happy to show you around the local area or visit places such as the beach, the capital city, Cape Coast Castle, Hans Cottage, Kakum National Park, Nzulenzu .etc. You may also wish to travel independently or with other volunteers to different parts of Ghana or other neighboring countries.
