We provide internship opportunities in partnership with the Ghana Education Service (Awutu Senya District) and some other private schools within the community, placing interns in areas where their assistance will be needed and where interns will learn a great deal from the host institution and fellow professionals.
Lack of teachers in most of the local schools leads to lack of motivation among the student population and low standard of education in the surrounding area. During the program, interns will learn more in depth about these types of challenges that Ghana faces, and also be able to contribute as a teacher and be a source of motivation to both pupils and staff of the schools.
You will gain first hand-experience as a teacher in one of our local schools (Nursery, Primary, Junior High, Senior High, charity home schools, commercial, technical and vocational schools). You can choose to teach any of the following subjects: English, Mathematics, Science, Computer Studies (ICT), Social Studies, French, Geography, History, Accounting, Business Management, Home Economics, Technical Drawing, Creative Arts, Physical Education, Religious Studies, and Music.
Interns can work with local headmasters and teachers to understand the administrative practices of running a school. This includes training in assessment, reports, filling in cumulative records, exam board process, Parent Teacher Associations, and extra-curricular activities. You can also meet and work with professionals of the District Education Service, to share ideas about the educational system in Ghana.
In addition, partner schools normally have sports on Friday, and interested teachers can also be part of the sports program to help with coaching and games.
CHF has a number of school clubs which gives interns the opportunity to help organize quiz and debate competitions to help motivate the children academically and also broaden their knowledge.
There are also a number of fun educational trips or excursions organized by the CHF to help interns learn a lot from the country. Ghanaians are known for their high hospitality and therefore interns would be very happy to work with the local people. Our caring and friendly staff is ever ready to support or help interns whenever necessary.
At the end of the placement, interns are awarded a certificate and a reference letter from Cheerful Hearts Foundation and the host institution, including a testimonial from the Ghana Education Service. We can also complete relevant documentation to achieve your academic credit at your University.
Typical Day of an Intern
Wake up around 7.00 am, bath, breakfast. Go to work for 8.00am. Teach at the school how your timetable provides. Lunch at around 12 noon at the school or a nearby restaurant. Return to work until 2.00 or 3.00pm. The number of working hours ranges from 4-6 hours per day; though the timetable is flexible to suit the intern. After working hours, the intern plans how he/she uses the remainder of the day. The intern can work with the headmaster, meet education professionals and/or help with after-school clubs, sports, games with the children, or just relax and enjoy some free time. At about 6.00pm supper is served, warm friendship from colleagues at work and town folk to keep you company and show you around and immerse into Ghanaian culture. Ghanaians are renowned for their friendliness and hospitality. The intern may also wish to spend their free time with other international interns and volunteers in the area.
Weekends are for your free time. CHF members will be more than happy to show you around the local area or visit places such as the beach, the capital city, Cape Coast Castle, Hans Cottage, Kakum National Park, Nzulenzu .etc. You may also wish to travel independently or with other interns and volunteers to different parts of Ghana or other neighboring countries.
